Have you joined the decluttering revolution?

January has seen thousands of us binging on Netflix series, and one of the surprise hits has been “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” The eight-part series shares the virtues of organising and changing your tidying experience.

Ripples of this de-cluttering craze started to emerge after she released her book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, which went on to become a bestseller.

But what on earth does this have to do with property?

Everything, our team will tell you. One of the foundations of getting your home ready for sale is decluttering and tidying all areas of your home. Although us Brits can be reserved, we are also naturally nosy. When viewing a home, it is second nature for us to open a cupboard or two to look inside. And don’t think your fridge doesn’t have a little viewing as well!

Potential buyers assess all aspects of your home. We know you want to achieve the best possible price for your property and at Alexander & Co we will do everything in our power to make that happen for you. But as they say, a carpenter is only as good as his tools, so give us a home that is presented ready for sale, and we will work our magic.

3 Top decluttering tips for home movers

Take one item at a time

This is one rule we have learnt from Marie Kondo and, after trying it out ourselves, we can certainly advocate it. Instead of walking into your bedroom with your serious face on and then, after an hour, getting completely overwhelmed with the task at hand, Marie tells us to start with one type of item at a time. Start by just doing your clothes, and then move onto books. Working your way through your home in this fashion means you will be more effective and efficient.

Does it ‘spark joy’?

How does the item make you feel? According to Marie, if an item has memories or ‘sparks joy’ then it can stay, if not, then get rid. It’s such an obvious philosophy, yet how many of us have items in our cupboards and attics that we have no emotional connection to, but that we keep out of obligation, or ‘just in case’ we ever need it!

“Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest,” says Marie.

Pack as you go

This little nugget is from our moving home toolbox. Whilst you are blitzing your home with your new amazing decluttering skills, why don’t you get a head start on your packing, ready for your move? Once you have decided what you are going to keep, if you’re not going to need it before you move, pack it.

Not only will you now have a more organised home, you will also ease the pressure of packing.

If you’re in the process of or thinking about selling your home, maybe it’s time you joined the decluttering revolution.
