Living in Berkhamsted

Situated just off the A41, Berkhamsted is a commuter town with close links to both the M1 and M25, as well as direct trains into London. It is very popular amongst families as a place to raise children, with the town itself boasting a plethora of nurseries, as well as the well-renowned Berkhamsted School, which dates back to 1541.

An historic town

Berkhamsted was first mentioned in the Doomsday Book in 1086, and is home to the ruins of a motte-and-bailey Norman castle, which once belonged to Thomas Becket, advisor to Henry I. It has a long history of being a market town, receiving Royal charters, and was particularly prevalent in the wool industry in the 12th and 13th centuries. Berkhamsted still has a market twice a week in the town, with a farmers’ market occurring every third Sunday of each month.

Stunning countryside

The town is nestled again incredible countryside, including Green Belt land, and is also part of the Chiltern Hills, which is a recognised Area of Outstanding National Beauty. Just a 10-minute drive from Berkhamsted there is also the stunning Ashridge House and Estate. Home to over 5,000 acres of land, Ashridge – now operated by the National Trust – is home to hundreds of miles of footpaths for locals and visitors to enjoy at all times of the year.

Pleasure and leisure

When it comes to leisure, Berkhamsted has plenty to suit all needs and interests, including its much-favoured independent cinema, The Rex. It is also home to plenty of sports clubs, including tennis, cricket and football clubs, pls England’s oldest archery club. The town is also home to plenty of independent restaurants, eateries and coffeeshops, offering plenty of choice to suit all tastes, and plenty of pubs too, many of which sit alongside the Grand Union Canal, which runs through the heart of the town.
